The year passes so swiftly, and all of a sudden, it was July, and we were gathering in Brooklyn and in Greenwich Village for the family reunion that had been so long in the planning. How grand to be together! We ate, drank, chatted--and admired the beautiful baby boy. Aaron drove up from Washington so that he could present his nephew with a giant box BRIMMING with toys and clothes, which WE all enjoyed, even if Constantine wasn't impressed. He liked the box, at least. |

There was also a charming feast at Joy and Larry's house, in the lovely courtyard--scene of so many family events--weddings, memorials, reunions, anniversaries. Some pictures here--mostly of charming grandson, but some of charming other people. |
After these celebrations, Jacob, Joy and I set out for Maine--flying to Portland, picking up a car and getting to Dameriscotta in time to have a lovely drink at Schooner's Landing before our lunch date with the family. When the bar keep told me $14 I gently reminded him that I was not just paying for my mimosa, but also for Joy's Bloody Mary, and Jacob's beer. Yes, that was the total for all 3 drinks, he said. Ah! Being totally ready to pay $14 for one drink--the well known Brooklyn effect on pricing expectations.
The house Jenny and Seth rented this year was quite lovely, and very peaceful indeed, looking out onto water and trees. It had a wide white painted porch stretching across the whole width of the house--so bright in the morning that you needed sunglasses--and to just sit there and look at the water was vacation enough. There was much family partying, so good to see everyone!Pictures here.
And then driving back to Portland and a speedy plane ride back to the ghastly heat of DC for me--and for Jacob and Joy: HOURS IN PORTLAND AIRPORT. Delta tactfully waited until they had gone through security before cancelling their flight. They then patiently waited in line in order to get the LAST TWO TICKETS on the 5 o'clock flight. Which was also cancelled. So they took the bus to Boston and the China bus from Boston to New York.*SIGH* They got there eventually. |
