My dear cousins Joy and Larry were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and their daughters Gwen and Jessica arranged a wonderful party.Their house (at 26 Jones Street, in Greenwich Village, in the heart of New York city) is full of memories for me, and I was thrilled to go. Washington to New YorkSeeing as this was no ordinary occasion, we decided to treat ourselves to the GOLD Vamoose bus, transport of surpassing elegance and luxury! A COMPLEMENTARY (= FREE) copy of the Washington Post was offered to us as we waited to board! The seats are not only plush gold leather, but much wider than usual! Free (if slow) WiFi!No champagne, however. This queen of buses made it to NY in an admirable three and a half hours, not so dusty. The trip back the next day took an hour longer, but that was due to heavy traffic on 95, which was perhaps unavoidable on a Sunday night. |
Jacob recently moved from Brooklyn to the Lower East Side. East side, West side, all around the town, goes the old song. Such charming neighborhood names, no? However, the meaning finally penetrated even my dim intellect. i.e., he lives in the lower east side of the city. An ancient, densely populated area of the city, an immigrant neighborhood, very lively and bustling. |
After a pleasant lunch, we took a meandering walk, through streets gaily decorated for the St. Gennaro festival (a yearly event cordially loathed by the locals but very popular with tourists, Jacob told us). |
We dropped into an art gallery, saw one of Beatrice's exquisite hotels, heading eventually into the Village, where we stopped to listen to an excellent be-bop group singing their hearts out in front of a bakery on Bleecker Street, and thence to Jones Street for a pre-party visit with Joy and Larry. |
Then we met Nicholas and Keith for dinner, in a pleasant little Italian place, and went home to bed. |
The next morning we had a pleasant breakfast at at blindingly trendy little place (BUBBLE AND SQUEAK on the menu! Can't get much more trendy than that!) and eventually set off for the party. The garden was all decorated and Joy and Larry had thrones and crowns--and the sun was shining, everybody was happy to be there! The tables were laden with food and drink, and the music played. Jessica had arranged a show with talks and pictures. Unfortunately, we had to leave in the middle to catch our bus home, but we got to listen for a bit. I am hoping Jessica will send me the materials, and I will link to them if so. Many many congratulations, Joy and Larry! Your constant and enduring love for each other is an inspiration to all of us.
