Seth and Jenny once again rented the beautiful house, and once again they generously hosted the family. By ones and twos, we made our way to South Bristol, leaving our sweltering cities with thankful hearts, bound for the rocky coast of Maine. Washington, for example, was so hot and humid that many people were simply lying on the floor with wet towels on their heads. But there is ever a cool breeze in Maine.
Joy had come all the way from Leeds (in the UK, where however it is not hot or even warm but always chill, according to her) joining Jacob in NY, from whence they flew to Portland and drove up to the house. I was so happy to spend time with them in that lovely place!
There was a LOT of eating and drinking going forward. Jenny and Seth believe in copious breakfasts, not to mention lunches and dinners. However, the SHINING STAR of the week was the magnicicent and HUGE jar of cheese balls provided by some of Anna's friends. This mighty container nourished the family AND their guests throughout the vacation. Even Anna found them slightly irresistible! And Henry felt he could feed on them forever. |
However, no one can live on Cheez Balls alone. Especially in Maine, where the waters teem with all sorts of tasty crustaceans, most notable: LOBSTERS. SO MANY LOBSTERS were eaten! At the house, in restaurants, in lobster pounds. Butter, we were basically drinking it.
MAIS NON! We were also revelling in the splendid scenery, for instance: taking the boat to Monhegan Island (with many a murmered prayer of thanks to that blessed drug DRAMAMINE, which allowed us to ride the heaving boat without heaving ourselves) where we HIKED MILES on rugged coast and heroically ate lunch WITHOUT any wine or beer to go with (but did we complain? NO!! Well not very much, at least.) On returning to the house we hosted a cocktail party! After which, we ate dinner at Christmas Cove where we admired the sunset as we devoured our dinner. You are to consider that admiring the sunset OR ANYTHING ELSE actually is demanding task requiring sustenance.
What joy that our visit coincided with Valeska's birthday party, a fine event with delicious food and wine. AND Kenny and Cheryl's beautiful grandchildren were there as was Henry James, Sarah Jane's adorable grandson--heavens, what a bunch of CUTIE PIES!
What?
Oh yes, other people were there too--aunts, uncles, second cousins, grandparents--all the rest of us. And, there were the most charming cats.
After a delightful week, I drove back to Portland to take the plane back.
The plane was 5 hours late.
But do I complain? Well, yes I complained, then and now.
However--SUCH an opportunity for heart-warming comraderie amongst the passengers! Not to mention, a fine--well, edible at least-- dinner at the airport! And, this was the first time I have stayed up past 3 am since those madcap days of youth. So, there is that!
Thank you to Seth and Jenny for their splendid hospitality--and thank you to the ravishingly beautiful state of Maine, for all the lovely days and pleasant times.
